Sourate 50 : Qaf

n1Sourate d'avant l'hégire (Coran mecquois)

Au nom de Dieu, le Tout Miséricordieux, le Très Miséricordieux.

Bismi Allāhi Ar-Raĥmāni Ar-Raĥīmi

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

  1. Qaf. Par le Coran glorieux !

    Qāf Wa Al-Qur'āni Al-Majīdi

    Qãf. By the glorious Quran!

    Bal `Ajibū 'An Jā'ahum Mundhirun Minhum Faqāla Al-Kāfirūna Hādhā Shay'un `Ajībun

˹All will be resurrected,˺ yet the deniers are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves ˹warning of resurrection˺. So the disbelievers say, “This is an astonishing thing!

  3. Quoi !

'A'idhā Mitnā Wa Kunnā Turābāan Dhālika Raj`un Ba`īdun

˹Will we be returned to life,˺ when we are dead and reduced to dust? Such a return is impossible.”

Qad `Alimnā Mā Tanquşu Al-'Arđu Minhum Wa `Indanā Kitābun Ĥafīžun

We certainly know what the earth consumes of them ˹after their death˺, and with us is a well-preserved Record n2Or a Record preserving ˹everything˺.

Bal Kadhabū Bil-Ĥaqqi Lammā Jā'ahum Fahum Fī 'Amrin Marījin

In fact, they reject the truth when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state n3 Meaning, they are confused about the Prophet (ﷺ): some say he is a poet, some say he is a fabricator, while others say he is insane. They also rejected the Quran as poetry, magic, or ancient fables.

'Afalam Yanžurū 'Ilá As-Samā'i Fawqahum Kayfa Banaynāhā Wa Zayyannāhā Wa Mā Lahā Min Furūjin

Have they not then looked at the sky above them: how We built it and adorned it ˹with stars˺, leaving it flawless?

Wa Al-'Arđa Madadnāhā Wa 'Alqaynā Fīhā Rawāsiya Wa 'Anbatnā Fīhā Min Kulli Zawjin Bahījin

As for the earth, We spread it out and placed upon it firm mountains, and produced in it every type of pleasant plant—

Tabşiratan Wa Dhikrá Likulli `Abdin Munībin

˹all as˺ an insight and a reminder to every servant who turns ˹to Allah˺.

Wa Nazzalnā Mina As-Samā'i Mā'an Mubārakāan Fa'anbatnā Bihi Jannātin Wa Ĥabba Al-Ĥaşīdi

And We send down blessed rain from the sky, bringing forth gardens and grains for harvest,

Wa An-Nakhla Bāsiqātin Lahā Ţal`un Nađīdun

and towering palm trees ˹loaded˺ with clustered fruit,

Rizqāan Lil`ibādi Wa 'Aĥyaynā Bihi Baldatan Maytāan Kadhālika Al-Khurūju

˹as˺ a provision for ˹Our˺ servants. And with this ˹rain˺ We revive a lifeless land. Similar is the emergence ˹from the graves˺.

Kadhabat Qablahum Qawmu Nūĥin Wa 'Aşĥābu Ar-Rassi Wa Thamūdu

Before them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth,˺ as did the people of the Water-pit n4Ar-Rass means “well” or “water-pit”. This refers to a pagan people, along with Midian, to whom Allah sent Prophet Shu’aib (ﷺ), Tham ûd,

Wa `Ādun Wa Fir`awnu Wa 'Ikhwānu Lūţin

’Ȃd, Pharaoh, the kinfolk of Lot,

Wa 'Aşĥābu Al-'Aykati Wa Qawmu Tubba`in Kullun Kadhaba Ar-Rusula Faĥaqqa Wa`īdi

the residents of the Forest n5The people of Shu’aib (ﷺ), and the people of Tubba’ n6Tubba’ Al-Ḥimiari was an ancient righteous Yemeni king whose people persisted in disbelief and were destroyed, although they were superior to the Meccans in strength and manpower. Each rejected ˹their˺ messenger, so My warning was fulfilled.

  15. Quoi ?

'Afa`ayīnā Bil-Khalqi Al-'Awwali Bal Hum Fī Labsin Min Khalqin Jadīdin

Were We incapable of creating ˹them˺ the first time? In fact, they are in doubt about ˹their˺ re-creation.

Wa Laqad Khalaqnā Al-'Insāna Wa Na`lamu Mā Tuwaswisu Bihi Nafsuhu Wa Naĥnu 'Aqrabu 'Ilayhi Min Ĥabli Al-Warīdi

Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ created humankind and ˹fully˺ know what their souls whisper to them, and We are closer to them than ˹their˺ jugular vein.

    'Idh Yatalaqqá Al-Mutalaqqiyāni `Ani Al-Yamīni Wa `Ani Ash-Shimāli Qa`īdun

As the two recording-angels—˹one˺ sitting to the right, and ˹the other to˺ the left—note ˹everything˺,

Mā Yalfižu Min Qawlin 'Illā Ladayhi Raqībun `Atīdun

not a word does a person utter without having a ˹vigilant˺ observer ready ˹to write it down˺ n7 The angel to the right records the good deeds of each person, while the one to the left records every evil deed. They always accompany the person at all times, except when one uses the toilet or is intimate with their spouse.

Wa Jā'at Sakratu Al-Mawti Bil-Ĥaqqi Dhālika Mā Kunta Minhu Taĥīdu

˹Ultimately,˺ with the throes of death will come the truth n8When a denier dies, they will realize that resurrection, judgment, Paradise, and Hell are all true. This is what you were trying to escape!

Wa Nufikha Fī Aş-Şūri Dhālika Yawmu Al-Wa`īdi

And the Trumpet will be blown n9This is the second blow which will cause all to come back to life for judgment. This is the Day ˹you were˺ warned of.

Wa Jā'at Kullu Nafsin Ma`ahā Sā'iqun Wa Shahīdun

Each soul will come forth with an angel to drive it and another to testify.

  22. ‹Tu restais indifférent à cela. Eh bien, Nous ôtons ton voile ; ta vue est perçante aujourd'hui.

Laqad Kunta Fī Ghaflatin Min Hādhā Fakashafnā `Anka Ghiţā'aka Fabaşaruka Al-Yawma Ĥadīdun

˹It will be said to the denier,˺ You were totally heedless of this. Now We have lifted this veil of yours, so Today your sight is sharp!

Wa Qāla Qarīnuhu Hādhā Mā Ladayya `Atīdun

And one’s accompanying-angel will say, Here is the record ready with me.

'Alqiyā Fī Jahannama Kulla Kaffārin `Anīdin

˹It will be said to both angels,˺ “Throw into Hell every stubborn disbeliever,

  25. acharné à empêcher le bien, transgresseur, douteur,

    Mannā`in Lilkhayri Mu`tadin Murībin

withholder of good, transgressor, and doubter,

    Al-Ladhī Ja`ala Ma`a Allāhi 'Ilahāan 'Ākhara Fa'alqiyāhu Fī Al-`Adhābi Ash-Shadīdi

who set up another god with Allah. So cast them into the severe punishment.”

Qāla Qarīnuhu Rabbanā Mā 'Aţghaytuhu Wa Lakin Kāna Fī Đalālin Ba`īdin

One’s ˹devilish˺ associate will say, Our Lord! I did not make them transgress. Rather, they were far astray ˹on their own˺.

Qāla Lā Takhtaşimū Ladayya Wa Qad Qaddamtu 'Ilaykum Bil-Wa`īdi

Allah will respond, “Do not dispute in My presence, since I had already given you a warning.

Mā Yubaddalu Al-Qawlu Ladayya Wa Mā 'Anā Bižallāmin Lil`abīdi

My Word cannot be changed n10Meaning, the decree to punish wicked humans and jinn (see 11:119 and 32:13)., nor am I unjust to ˹My˺ creation.”

Yawma Naqūlu Lijahannama Hal Amtala'ti Wa Taqūlu Hal Min Mazīdin

˹Beware of˺ the Day We will ask Hell, Are you full ˹yet˺? And it will respond, Are there any more?

Wa 'Uzlifati Al-Jannatu Lilmuttaqīna Ghayra Ba`īdin

And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far off.

Hādhā Mā Tū`adūna Likulli 'Awwābin Ĥafīžin

˹And it will be said to them,˺ “This is what you were promised, for whoever ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺ and kept up ˹His commandments˺—

Man Khashiya Ar-Raĥmana Bil-Ghaybi Wa Jā'a Biqalbin Munībin

who were in awe of the Most Compassionate without seeing ˹Him˺,1 and have come with a heart turning ˹only to Him˺.

  34. Entrez-y en toute sécurité›. Voilà le jour de l'éternité !

    Adkhulūhā Bisalāmin Dhālika Yawmu Al-Khulūdi

Enter it in peace. This is the Day of eternal life!”

Lahum Mā Yashā'ūna Fīhā Wa Ladaynā Mazīdun

There they will have whatever they desire, and with Us is ˹even˺ more n11i.e., looking at the Face of the Almighty (see 10:26 and 75:22-23).

Wa Kam 'Ahlaknā Qablahum Min Qarnin Hum 'Ashaddu Minhum Baţshāan Fanaqqabū Fī Al-Bilādi Hal Min Maĥīşin

˹Imagine˺ how many peoples We destroyed before them, who were far mightier than them. Then ˹when the torment came,˺ they ˹desperately˺ sought refuge in the land. ˹But˺ was there any escape?

'Inna Fī Dhālika Ladhikrá Liman Kāna Lahu Qalbun 'Aw 'Alqá As-Sam`a Wa Huwa Shahīdun

Surely in this is a reminder for whoever has a ˹mindful˺ heart and lends an attentive ear.

Wa Laqad Khalaqnā As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđa Wa Mā Baynahumā Fī Sittati 'Ayyāmin Wa Mā Massanā Min Lughūbin

Indeed, We created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six Days n12 See footnote for 7:54, and We were not ˹even˺ touched with fatigue n13 Some scholars believe this verse comes in response to Exodus 31:17, which says, The Lord made the heavens and the earth in six days, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.

  39. Endure donc ce qu'ils disent : et célèbre la louange de ton Seigneur avant le lever du soleil et avant [son] coucher ;

    فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ ٱلْغُرُوبِ

Fāşbir `Alá Mā Yaqūlūna Wa Sabbiĥ Biĥamdi Rabbika Qabla Ţulū`i Ash-Shamsi Wa Qabla Al-Ghurūbi

So be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say. And glorify the praises of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset.

Wa Mina Al-Layli Fasabbiĥhu Wa 'Adbāra As-Sujūdi

And glorify Him during part of the night1 and after the prayers.

Wa Astami` Yawma Yunādi Al-Munādi Min Makānin Qarībin

And listen! On the Day the caller will call out from a near place,

    Yawma Yasma`ūna Aş-Şayĥata Bil-Ĥaqqi Dhālika Yawmu Al-Khurūji

the Day all will hear the ˹mighty˺ Blast in ˹all˺ truth n14 See footnote for 50:20, that will be the Day of emergence ˹from the graves˺.

'Innā Naĥnu Nuĥyī Wa Numītu Wa 'Ilaynā Al-Maşīru

It is certainly We Who give life and cause death. And to Us is the final return.

    Yawma Tashaqqaqu Al-'Arđu `Anhum Sirā`āan Dhālika Ĥashrun `Alaynā Yasīrun

˹Beware of˺ the Day the earth will split open, letting them rush forth. That will be an easy gathering for Us.

Naĥnu 'A`lamu Bimā Yaqūlūna Wa Mā 'Anta `Alayhim Bijabbārin Fadhakkir Bil-Qur'āni Man Yakhāfu Wa`īdi

We know best what they say. And you ˹O Prophet˺ are not ˹there˺ to compel them ˹to believe˺. So remind with the Quran ˹only˺ those who fear My warning.
