Fort Constitution, (N. H.) 13 janvier 1835.
Messieurs, rédacteurs : Nous vous prions de soumettre les faits suivants à la considération des instruits, for the illustration of a most extraordinary phenomenon, which we witnessed on the morning of the 12th inst. between the hours of four and five o'clock. The moon was beaming in cloudless majesty. The whole arch of Heaven was beautifully studded with glittering stars, reflecting their sparkling light in the mirror-like bosom of the mighty gazing in rapturous delight on the heavenly scene, our attention was attracted to a 'light' in a S. E. direction (we immediately conjectured it was a vessel on fire. The first impulse was to acquaint the commanding officer of the post that the boats might be dispatched to the aid of the burning vessel ; but when casting an eye on a line parallel with the parapet, we noticed the fire mount on the skirts of the horizon, and assume the appearance of a ball of fire, emitting large veins of fire at intervals on its course to the zenith, where it arrived, we believe, one hour and a half from the time we first saw it, and became invisible.—Portsmouth Journal.
